Fast Molecular Compression by a Hyperthermal Collision Gives Bond-Selective Mechanochemistry

نویسندگان

چکیده

Using electrospray ion beam deposition, we collide the complex molecule Reichardt's Dye (C41H30NO+) at low, hyperthermal translational energy (2-50 eV) with a Cu(100) surface and image outcome single-molecule level by scanning tunneling microscopy. We observe bond-selective reaction induced kinetic energy. The collision impulse compresses bends specific bonds, prompting them to react selectively. This dynamics drives system seek thermally inaccessible reactive pathways, since compression timescale (sub-ps) is much shorter than thermalization (ns), thereby yielding products that are unobtainable thermally.

Mechanochemistry: one bond at a time.

Single-molecule force-clamp spectroscopy offers a novel platform for mechanically denaturing proteins by applying a constant force to a polyprotein. A powerful emerging application of the technique is that, by introducing a disulfide bond in each protein module, the chemical kinetics of disulfide bond cleavage under different stretching forces can be probed at the single-bond level. Even at for...

The mechanochemistry of molecular motors.

A theory of molecular motors is presented that explains how the energy released in single chemical reactions can generate mechanical motion and force. In the simplest case the fluctuating movements of a motor enzyme are well described by a diffusion process on a two-dimensional potential energy surface, where one dimension is a chemical reaction coordinate and the other is the spatial displacem...

Selective Extraction of Flavonoids from Sophora flavescens Ait. by Mechanochemistry.

Flavonoids from Sophora flavescens were selectively extracted by mechanochemical-promoted extraction technology (MPET) after using response surface methodology to determine the optimal extraction parameters. The highest yield of 35.17 mg/g was achieved by grinding the roots with Na₂CO₃ (15%) at 440 rpm/min for 17.0 min and water was used as the sole solvent with a ratio of solvent to solid mate...

Mechanochemistry: the varied applications of mechanical bond-breaking

Mechanochemistry meansmechanical breakage of intramolecular bonds by external force and must be differentiated from molecular solid-state chemistry, where contacts between micronized molecular solids are created by the mechanical action for mutual approach of the reacting centers. After an outline of the mechanistic differences, the varied mechanochemistry is discussed. Grinding, milling, shear...
